Soane Museum 3, Bust of Shakespeare.

Bust of William Shakespeare
Soane Museum.
Lincolns Inn Fields. London.

Plaster.

41 x 23 x 30 cms across the shoulders.

Anonymous.

Probably post 1814.

For an interesting look at the monument to Shakespeare in the church at Stratford see -

This bust is obviously en suite with the previous two postings of Plaster Busts of Ben Jonson and William Camden.

It appears to have been cast from the Bullock cast of the Shakespeare monument at Holy Trinity Church Stratford upon Avon (see below).

This would suggest that the three busts, each sitting on the stack of books were created after the casting of the Shakespeare bust by George Bullock in 1814.

I have posted at some length on the various busts and sculptures of Shakespeare.

See my next post for further photographs of this bust.

Cast by Liverpool polymath George Bullock (1788 - 1818). Almost certainly with the involvement of Stratford antiquarian and Shakespeare enthusiast Robert Bell Wheler (1785 - 1857).

In 1814 he publishes Guide to Stratford upon Avon

On the back is the inscription.

Moulded by Geo Bullock / from the original / in the church / at Stratford / Dec. 1814.

Another Plaster Cast at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Acquired in 1868 from the Wheler Collection donated by his sister Ann Wheler to the trust by (see above).

For a very interesting article on the cleaning and casting of bust unfortunately no mention of Bullock see letter below lifted from -
